Chapter 10
Hudson strolled into the Ender’s Peak Ski Resort Café early enough to grab some grub before his afternoon of lessons with a new group of volunteer coaches started.
He drank in the surroundings of the great room and thought that no matter the surface differences, this resort was much the same as Ridgewood. His disabled students were different, too, but they were also the same as the Ridgewood Ski Team—some of the same dreams, drive, passion and motivation.
As he strolled toward the café that would soon grow crowded, he thought about the one big difference—Shannon wasn’t here. He wouldn’t see her during practice, training or rehab, or at the on-site gym. Nor would he run into her. This wasn’t her father’s lodge.
But now that she’d filled out the adaptive-ski-program application and gone through volunteer training, he would see her on occasion, depending on how often she chose to volunteer and work with him. That was, through the end of the ski season. It was already mid-March. Only a few more weeks of the season left in New Mexico.
He would see her this afternoon. Definitely something to look forward to.
Smiling, he sidled up to the counter and ordered coffee along with lunch from Clyde, a new friend at Ender’s Peak. From across the room, Amanda made eye contact and headed straight for him. He took a sip from the quickly delivered mug while he waited on his order of jalapeño sliders and fries, and on Amanda’s approach.
“Hudson, glad I caught you before you hit the slopes.” Her dark eyes crinkled at the corners.
“What’s up?”
“I’ve heard some great things about what you’re doing out there. I knew you’d be a hit.” She smiled.
“Thanks, I appreciate you letting me know.”
“The thanks goes to you for making the change in your career. For making the move. We can always use good coaches.” She slid onto a stool next to him. “People with heart.”
Clyde set the plate of sliders on the counter in front of Hudson. He looked down. If she only knew his reasons. She might not think she had the right guy, after all. He was one of the guilty. He was to blame for causing someone else a life-altering injury. But Amanda didn’t know that about him, and he was also guilty for keeping that well hidden. News of his sister’s accident had been successfully shielded from the media years ago when it had happened.
“I’m glad you think so,” he said.
“I do. And good job bringing Shannon de Croix on board as a volunteer for the disabled program. I know a lot of the kids really look up to her. She’s such a great example of someone who doesn’t give up. I hear she’s still training hard for next season. Good for her.”
Hudson tried to hide his consternation at the topic. With his stomach growling and limited time to eat, he eyed his slider, but he didn’t want to cut Amanda off. “Yeah, I think she’ll be great with the kids.
